Members of the Oakhill Values Group recently had the privilege of supporting the work of our school charity, Milly’s Smiles.
The charity provides support for families whose child has been newly diagnosed with cancer through the gift of a very special bag. Each bag is given to families admitted to one of the specialist paediatric oncology wards supported by the charity.
Our pupils spent time carefully packing the bags, making sure each thoughtfully chosen item was included. A particularly poignant moment came when Milly’s mum spoke to the group about the positive difference the bags make and how the next family to open one will be directly affected by cancer.
Since then, our school community has continued its support in impressive fashion. Lorraine from Milly’s Smiles recently joined us in assembly to receive donations raised through our latest fundraising efforts. Pupils were proud to present a cheque for almost £600, alongside a huge collection of toiletries and sweets for the Milly Bags.
The support extended far beyond the classroom. Parents, members of Oakhill Leisure and even a local knitting group all contributed generously, with knitters and parents creating 25 adorable handmade elephants to include in the bags.
At Oakhill, we are committed to making a positive impact both within school and in the wider community. Opportunities such as this allow our pupils to put values into action, learn about empathy and kindness and experience first-hand how small acts of support can make a real difference to others.
Our Values Group is already planning its next activities and we are all looking forward to continuing our support of this incredible local charity. We are very grateful to everyone who contributed so generously to such a meaningful cause.
