Year 3 pupils had the exciting opportunity to write to world-famous climber Alex Honnold following his remarkable free-solo climb of Taipei 101.
Many pupils had watched parts of the climb on Netflix, but the most thrilling aspect for them was knowing that William’s dad, Jason, was part of the safety and rigging team supporting Alex. This gave the children a unique first-hand connection to the achievement.
The pupils’ letters, full of admiration and curiosity, were kindly passed on to Alex by Jason. The response they received was warm, insightful and encouraging:
“Thanks! I appreciate the messages. The climb was amazing for me — it was quite windy but not too tiring because I had trained a lot. I was a little bit nervous because of all the people, but it turned out to be really fun — the people were part of the experience. I couldn’t have done it without the whole team of people who helped, people like William’s dad. It was a team effort.”
The exchange gave pupils a real insight into what it takes to accomplish remarkable challenges, highlighting the importance of preparation, teamwork and enjoying the experience.
It was a memorable moment for the class and a perfect example of how learning can be connected to inspiring real-world achievements.
